EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
NorthwestFest International Documentary Festival & Rainbow Visions Film Festival (Edmonton)
Term: Permanent Part-Time Contract (20-25 hours per week; year-round)

 

About NorthwestFest:
NorthwestFest International Documentary Festival 
(previously known as Global Visions Film Festival) has entertained and educated Edmonton audiences for over 35 years. In the midst of a major growth phase, the organization is now seeking to realize its goal of becoming Western Canada’s premier non-fiction film festival. With this end in mind, NorthwestFest has worked diligently to develop great partnerships with numerous cultural organizations and community groups. While consistently bringing a diverse group of Edmontonians the best in non-fiction, music, and documentary programming, the organization has sought out innovative ways to elevate the audience experience. The Festival always aims to be less exclusive, and more inclusive.

In keeping with this mandate, we also founded Rainbow Visions Film Festival, Edmonton’s 4-day LGBTQ Film Festival. Held each November, Rainbow Visions is about to hold its 4th edition, this November 1st – 4th. The successful candidate will also be expected to oversee the day to day business of Rainbow Visions.

 

The Ideal Candidate:
NorthwestFest
is seeking a dynamic, enthusiastic and collaborative leader, to serve alongside our Artistic Director, to help build organizational strategy and operational capacity.

This individual should have superior administrative, operational, research, project management, events planning, marketing and hosting skills; will play a key role in expanding funding and community outreach; and will be instrumental in planning and carrying out initiatives, seeking to identify and engage key external stakeholders.

The ideal candidate will be a motivated and adaptable self-starter, helping NorthwestFest with a focus on strategy, collaboration, and execution.

 

Duties and Responsibilities: 

 Participate with the Board of Directors in developing a strategic plan to guide the organization

 Foster effective teamwork between the Board and the Executive Director and between the Executive Director and staff

 Ensure that the operation of the organization meets the expectations of its clients, Board, and Funders

 Oversee the efficient and effective day-to-day operation of the organization

 Work in close collaboration with the Artistic Director, who is responsible for the development and execution of creative programming content

 Provide project management leadership in the design, planning, implementation and evaluation of the organization’s festivals and off-festival programs

 Work with staff and the Board (Treasurer/Finance Committee) to prepare a comprehensive budget

 Work with the Board to secure adequate funding for the operation of the organization

 Research funding sources, oversee the development of fundraising plans and write funding proposals and grants submissions

 Provide the Board with comprehensive, regular reports on the revenues and expenditure of the organization (working with board Treasurer)

 Represent the organization professionally at community and industry events

 Ensure that all staff receives an orientation to the organization and that appropriate training is provided

 

Required Skills and Qualifications: 

 5+ years of experience in organizational planning, design, and process, communications and strategy execution

 Strong collaboration skills, and the ability to build relationships with Board, staff and stakeholders

 Proven ability to lead multiple concurrent projects, forge partnerships, and deliver results

 Experience writing and submitting Grants

 Experience with basic bookkeeping and accounting principals

 Excellent written and verbal communication skills

 Familiarity with organizational design and team building

 Entrepreneurial spirit, and efficiency with limited resources

 Passion for film and non-fiction storytelling

 Proud supporter of or advocate for the LGBTQ community

 Strong knowledge of the non-profit field and market, preference for arts and culture experience

 Familiarity with media and marketing not required, but strongly preferred

Hours
Although much of the work is seasonal (based on Festivals and Grants), the position will require a commitment of 20-25 hours per week, throughout the entire course of the initial one-year probationary contract (this includes the *off-season*)

Compensation
$25,000 – $30,000 based on qualifications and experience
